In applications requiring linear motion, there are several factors to consider. You want precise, repeatable motion, but you also want low friction. Igus makes linear motion hardware using low-friction, self lubricating polymers.
According to Nils Schumacher, head of international sales, Drylin linear technology business unit, motion polymers are the base technology of igus. Without the need to lubricate or maintain polymers throughout the life of the system, igus linear motion can be more precise, lower maintenance and more dirt-resistant than traditional metal ball components.
Cutting out the need for lubricants opens the door to many applications for polymer-based motion components and new opportunities for automation. For example, systems can be run under powder, under water, or in dusty environments without suffering wear or corrosion. Igus also provides polymers temperature resistant up to 250 C.
The technology is favored in packaging and food industry automation, thanks to the unique lack of lubricants and contaminants.
